Powerful i.MX8QM/QP SBC to ease development challenges & accelerate innovations

Bangalore-based embedded solutions provider iWave Systems has added a new SBC to their leading line up of NXP® i.MX-based Single board Computers. Titled iW-Rainbow-G27S, this high-performance SBC based on NXP’s i.MX 8QuadMax/Quad Plus applications processors and runs Linux® 4.14.98 and Android™ Pie 9.0.0*as its OS. The SBC is designed to achieve high-performance real-time multimedia processing in demanding automotive, medical, and industrial applications.

The SBC incorporates 2x Arm® Cortex®-A72 @1.8 GHz and 4x Arm® Cortex®-A53 @1.2 GHz, and 2x additional Cortex®-M4F @ 266 MHz – providing a power-packed solution on a highly integrated 100 mm X 72 mm form factor.

Additional features include 4K H.265 capable VPU, Dual Vivante GC7000 GPU, expandable 4GB LPDDR4 and 8GB eMMC Flash, on-board Dual Gigabit Ethernet PHY, industrial CAN, USB 3.0, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 5.0 and a host of other network interfaces.

Advanced use cases include High-Speed Networking, Edge Computing, Industrial Automation, 4K imaging, e-Cockpit, Intelligent Data Centers and more.

Adding new dimensions for innovation:

Intelligent Edge:

iWave SBC is designed to help speed the revolutionary transition that edge computing can realize in new-age applications. Be it medical, industrial, or automotive, the i.MX 8-based SBC, with its intuitive real-time processing, flexible high-speed memory, and robust connectivity, can add intelligence to your end application quickly.

Rich Interactive GUI:

Native to the SBC is an integrated high-performance dual GC7000 3D GPU and 4K H.265 capable VPU that combines to offer rich interactive graphical experience on up to 4 x HD or one 4K display. Dual failover-ready NXP’s SafeAssure® display controller ensures critical displays are always on with reliable, high-quality content. An additional Cadence® Tensilica® HiFi 4 DSP core further offloads the main cores and adds flexibility for a variety of end applications.

Hardware Virtualization:

When there is a powerful heterogeneous processing platform to take care of the computing performance, it is very important to ensure that all the hardware resources are utilized efficiently and to full potential. This is achieved by hardware virtualization. iWave has successfully integrated an open-source type 1 Xen hypervisor to enable a versatile multi-OS implementation on the i.MX 8 SoC. The generated domains are fully secure and independent from others, ensuring a multi-application platform with failover safe performance.

Optimized Power Consumption:

Thanks to the use of multiple low-power technologies, the iWave SBC intelligently manages the power efficiency of the entire system. The Cortex-M4F cores are configured to monitor the system in low power mode, while the main processors are deactivated. The main cores can be activated either using predefined wake-up time or when there is a user-defined interrupt. Power is also kept to a minimum with the use of high-speed LPDDR, and the incorporation of NXP’s dual PF8100 Power Management Integrated Circuit.

Secure and Safe platform

iWave’s SBC includes a dedicated Security Microcontroller (SECO) to perform the security functions. The SECO controller verifies the authenticity of the Uboot, Linux, and RTOS binaries. The binaries are signed with a certificate that is stored in the module’s immutable storage. The security controller also contains a Cryptographic Acceleration and Assurance Module (CAAM) to implement secure and validated cryptography mechanisms and further enhance data security in the SBC platform.

“iWave is committed to delivering high-quality solutions that will help our customers build products much quicker and with ease. It is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with NXP, and we are excited to launch the new i.MX 8QuadMax/Quad Plus SBC for real-time multimedia and intelligent edge applications,” said Abdullah Khan, President, iWave Systems Technologies, India.

“The NXP i.MX 8QuadMax and i.MX 8QuadPlus offer the ability to transform the way we interact with truly integrated eCockpits, multi-camera and multi-domain systems in industrial markets;  all on one chip,” said Robert Thompson, chief enablement architect for i.MX applications processors at NXP. “To fully enable these advanced usage models in customer products, collaboration with trusted partners such as iWave Technologies was key to our go-to market strategy. The iW-Rainbow-G27S will help facilitate a faster time to market for many customers wanting to use the i.MX 8QuadMax.”
